We have tournaments almost every weekend and practices twice a week!

The 2007-2008 season is approaching fast and we cannot wait.  We have built a great foundation this past year with freshmen who are ready to just get better. This summer they will be attending Debate Camps ranging from: Stanford, Berkeley, Northwestern, Michigan State, Michigan, Emory and more!

We know that the 07-08 season will continue our history of success.

The FCHS Debate team focuses on many different styles of debate.

1)       Policy Debate: This is the most popular form of debate since it is GHSA sanctioned and involved the State Championship. This form of debate enhances speaking ability, research, and many other areas viable to academic success.  The 2007-2008 topic for Policy debate is: “The United States federal government should substantially increase its public health assistance to Sub Saharan Africa.”  In the debate class, your student will start off doing policy debate.

2)      Public Forum Debate: This is a growing event that involves controversy issue discussion.  This type of debate is extremely effective for upperclassmen who want to be involved in debate. A topic from last year was: “The United States federal government should ratify the Kyoto Protocol.”

3)      Lincoln Douglas Debate: Fayette has not had an active LD team in three years but we are trying to grow this part of our team. This is like policy debate, except usually slower and it focuses on theoretical, political, and moral issues. An example of a resolution is: “In matters of collecting military intelligence, the ends justify the means.”

4)      Individual Events: The Fayette team always has strong performances from individuals.  We received three All State Championship bids in 2006-2007.  Events include Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Original Oratory, Humorous and Dramatic Interpretation, Poetry Recitation, and many more!  Parents can easily judge these events and usually enjoy it! Ms. Kelly’s speech class will instruct the students on almost all of these events.
